Post What it Takes starts today!
What it Takes

Have barely had time to think about this due to my academic schedule, but luckily I've got a little bit of a buffer.

Rated R for profanity and violence, so I haven't submitted any banner materials yet, no worries you PG/G-rated folks!

Until I can work far ahead, it will update W/F. When I can get a good buffer, it'll go to M/W/F.

Cool stuff, Kez! I know what you mean about having a good buffer cause of school... this is my last semester, so even though my comic is gonna be only once a week, I'll probably have something like a 12 page buffer when it starts up.

Do you mind if I ask a question that's kind of on the technical side? How is it that you already have PW ads on your new comic... Did you just submit a new website to host ads on and they accepted? I wanted to do that with my new site too, but on the form they seem to make a big deal out of how if you're applying to host ads on a comic, it should have at least 30 pages, and they'll check your archive to make sure it does, etc. So I figure they'll just reject me if I do it at this time. But I don't want to have to wait over 6 months. So are they not as finicky as I think, and I can still apply even though I've got nothing yet? Or how did you do it?

I have all my comics set up on my home domain (warofwinds.com) specifically (one of the specifically's at least...) so I don't have to deal with ad company issues. They issue the code per domain. Since War of Winds and Not Alone have about 400 pages total, there's no problem. I use the same ad block on all my comics.

There's no reason why you shouldn't/couldn't use whatever ads you are currently showing on TAM on SNS. I'd actually recommend it, because the combined visits will give you a better rate. Please note, this is only for Project Wonderful. If you're using any other ad server you'll have to get the domain specifically approved.

Ah, I thought that might be the reason. Yeah, it would be a good idea to use the same ad blocks on both domains, especially my tower ad. But I don't think it's safe to just copy and paste the code, because I know that PW's ad boxes constantly phone home (like if your site goes down, they know and disable your ads) so they can probably detect if you've got the same code running on an unapproved domain name. But no worries, I think I can get around that... I don't think there's really any reason why it shouldn't be allowed anyway.

I'm excited to see where What it Takes is going to go, Kez. :)

Incidentally, we applied to Project Wonderful when we had... um, I think 22 pages up. In our app, we did include the fact that we had a larger offline buffer, though - I'm not sure how much of a difference that made. But 30 comic pages is a suggestion, I think, more than a determining factor.

Wow, KEZ, a cynical tough-talking heroine with guns and able to kick butt (am looking forward to seeing your MA scenes) even without high-calibre artillery? YESS! Swamps? YESS! Mummified stiffs? COOL! Post-apo settings? CAN'T BEAT THEM! And all that twice a week? XMAS!
No kiddin' - looks like you've got what it takes!
Good stuff, honestly!

shbomb,
Re PW - As long as you already have one domain approved by them, it seems like they don't put up any problems at all even when you ask for the approval of a totally different domain. I just got the real.com for my stuff PW-approved....and the URL I submitted was one single index page with basically nothing on it - just re-directing to my current domain.

Cool, well thanks for all the tips. But actually, I probably won't submit my new domain at all now that I see the benefit of just pasting in my old the-artiste.net ads on my new site. That way one ad slot gets the views and click of two sites, raising its value. And I was wrong, they don't seem to care if you do that, as long as you don't remove the ads from they site that was originally approved.
