Um... hello?
Hi all! My name is Michalina, and I'm studying computer science in Switzerland. I feel a little out of place here as I do not (yet) have my own comic. I follow a bunch of Spider comics and I have some drawings of my own: http://micha7a.github.io/As a kid I've been doing linocut and pen and ink drawings, and now I'm struggling to use digital tools and colour I'm amazed how people are able to create a full comic page (or more) a week!

Welcome! I like your art. That's super cool you're a mathematician. Are you thinking of starting a comic?

Digital is definitely an uphill climb if you're used to traditional tools. It used to take me like 10 hours when I first started to turn out a single page... I have whittled it down to about 2.5-5 hours. Now I'm to the point where every time I find a new "shortcut" to save time, I fill it with more detail somewhere!
You have a lovely hand and eye for art though! Your portfolio is awesome!

Wow, a master's in topology and set theory! That is super impressive! I'm sort of the opposite, a artist who is currently studying math (quantitative economics). I really appreciate getting to know people who are interested in both math and art, as I think the two fields have a lot in common, so I hope you stick around. We also could use more people in the European time zones, haha. I'm in Lithuania, myself. What kind of story would you want to write for your hypothetical webcomic? Aww, you are all so nice! I haven't felt this welcome in a while! trmcleodprime wrote: Hello and welcome. I'm new to the forums about also. I really like your sketches. Thank you! I wanted to make a mini comic for a start (like 10 pages), but I only got to 3 pages so far... Darwin wrote: Digital is definitely an uphill climb if you're used to traditional tools.

It's good to hear that others had similar experiences, and that there is hope for me!

I think so too! I wanted to make a blog about parallels betwen math and art, kind of to show that math it's not only the algebra exercises you do in school but also a way to look at the world. But I never get to it, studies take to much time But if I ever do, I'd use collaboration from an artist sskessa wrote: We also could use more people in the European time zones, haha. Good Morning! sskessa wrote: What kind of story would you want to write for your hypothetical webcomic?
I wanted to start with a very short post-apo story, where really there is no apcalipse, just people are stupid. I had it planned and all, but with the current covid situation it does not seem so original anymore.

Ah, good idea! If you want any feedback on your progress, we have the Constructive Critique section of the forums here, or the Webcomic Clinic channel on the discord.

It doesn't matter if it's unoriginal, a short story is really just solid comic making practice, not something you'll be bound to work on for decades to come. Even at one page a week, you'll be done in 3 months. Worth it if you planned the story. Anyway, it wasn't original pre-Covid either, ever seen a grand movie called Idiocracy? It's not about originality, it's about how you end up presenting your ideas. I'm sure your short comic will delight someone and give you good practice at the art of comic creation. Welcome.

Good point! I don't think I'm able to produce one page per week though :P Tiana wrote: Anyway, it wasn't original pre-Covid either, ever seen a grand movie called Idiocracy? I haven't seen it but I've certainly heard about it. And you have a point again, thanks for encouragement Now I guess I have to get to it and post something on Constructive Critique

That's the spirit! Make your short story and show it here at whatever pace suits you.

Welcome micha7a, so nice to have you join us! Your background and experiences sound super interesting, I look forward to seeing how they colour your approach to your stories! I checked out your site and your digital art is really nice, I love the textures and lighting in your work. (And that little yawning owl! and the sheep! ) Do you still do any linocut work? I really appreciate the medium, though I have a hard time making them myself, haha. I personally do a lot of work traditionally - my comic is traditional media - and have only recently started to do more comics work digitally again. There are lots of comics doing interesting things with digital, traditional and mixing the two, there's so much potential to experiment with!

Tbh, I wasn't very good at it ;) But now I have a more nomadic life style and a laptop with a small tablet is much more practical than linocut or any other fancy technique. maiji wrote: I personally do a lot of work traditionally - my comic is traditional media - and have only recently started to do more comics work digitally again. Do you have some pointers to the comics? Maybe I'm not aware of which are not digital.
