RPG Future Rules System
Al-X wrote: Another thing that's up in the air is still whether I should keep all the rules for the d20 system (D&D 3.5) or switch to D&D 4th Edition, or even go with other systems, mainly Mutants & Masterminds' Super-Link system. I could dual-post 3.5/Super-Link, but if I go 4th-Ed., no other versions are allowed to exist under the new license.
If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion:

Interesting... I have absolutely no experience with Pinnacle products, but the system seems light and easy. I'll have to ponder if it would fit what I want to do with it.

There's currently a thread going on in the Pinnacle forum that started with someone asking pretty much the same question: " Is this the games I've been looking for?"
It might give you some insight into what SW can do for you...
Or you could just grab this, thisand a couple of friends and try it out!
P.S.: No, I'm not getting paid for this ... I just really like the game, and I really don't like D&D...

Ok; you half-sold the idea to me
I might do Nahast for Savage Worlds until the Pathfinder license is released next year, and then do dual-stat things; I'll try to con a few people into trying the system

Great!
One thing I'll need to warn you about is Pinnacle's licensing system (not beause it's overly complicated, but to avoid legal trouble).
They've got two licenses available: The Fan License and the Official License.
The Fan License allows you to use the SW rules in your homebrew and make that homebrew publicly available as long as this happens in a completely non-commercial manner. The question whether or not a website containing advertising and/or a donation request counts as "commercial" is currently under consideration.
The Official License is required if you plan to make money off your seeting in any way. The License doesn't cost you anything, but you need to contact Pinnacle to be granted this license. Basically, you'll need to convinve them that you are capable of delivering a professional end product.
Apparently, Official Licensees also have the option to negotiate with Pinnacle (and Official Licensees) to reproduce content that has been created for one of the existing settings. This is bound to cost money (after all you'd be using someone else's work in a product you're gonna sell), but it means you wouldn't have to "reinvent the wheel" for aspects that others have already taken care of...
And as to double statting; many of the Official Licensees do that already, offering their products for either SW/d20 or SW/True20/M&M. One company even produces their own rules system and SW supplements side-by-side.

Oh, the licensing is the FIRST thing I checked. Someone in LiveJournal suggested using GURPs which, besides my loathing for the system even if its sourcebooks are fantastic, is not free.
Still, I need to put together a decent-looking PDF before I apply for the pro-license. I'm a one-man design studio since I have no money to invest to pay people (and way too ethical to ask anyone to work for free), but I'm pretty sure I can pull it off.
And I like reinventing the wheel!

Another possible option would be to approach one of the established Licensees and ask them if they'd be interested in publishing your setting.
That way you wouldn't need to acquire a license for yourself.

If someone offers their skills & services for no money, doesn't mean they are doing it for free.
You could certainly give them credit in the acknowledgements/credits section that way they can put it on their resumes when they go out for day jobs.
I did a lot of pro-bono work when I got out of college when I couldn't find work, people were impressed by that and bam I finally got a good job.
Also remembered if you do 100% of the work you don't have time for anything else. If I do 50% and you do 50% it stills gets done and then we both have time to do other things.
Of course part of that is finding someone you can trust to do 50% of the work to the standards you would do it.
A lot of first time entrepreneurs take a while to learn this lesson, this is also seemingly very common with artists where it's their work so they do everything themselves.
EDIT:
Okay I didn't mean to sound pompous and arrogant with this post but I'm not sure how to rewrite this so it sounds like constructive advice and NOT de-constructive criticism.

True, true, but it's kind of a personal challenge. I want to be able to at least understand the basics of book layout and design so that I don't speak nonsense in the eventual chance that I will have someone working for me doing that.
After the first couple of pdfs, I'll prolly handle the layout to somebody else; I mean... I have to get other artists for illustrations too

Welcome back
I'm still thinking about restarting/continuing the RP storylines. I saved the threads before closing down the old forums (which were actually run from my own webspace, not ComicGen ), but... I'm convinced now that I can't run them myself, especially now that I have a dayjob and many other projects on the line, so, before I do so, I'm going to need a volunteer to act as GM, and I'd remain as a "consultant" on the setting stuff

Re: RPG Future Rules System
So, from what I see in the Heroes & Legends section, I guess you ultimately decided to stick with the old D20 rules? From my point of view that's a real pity, 'cause as I wrote earlier, I really don't like D&D. Look's like I'll just have to convert the stats to SW myself, then... As they say: "Anything can be Savaged!"

Re: RPG Future Rules System
I haven't worked towards converting stuff into SW for the simple reason that I haven't had the time to study the system in depth and plan the conversions ^^ Life has been incredibly hectic this past month (and it's not over yet <.<), but, while the final PDF product I'll put out there will most likely stick with old d20/Pathfinder or 4E (I'm liking the system the more I play it, but that my be my kickass DM's effect ), I want the Heroes & Legends site to include the SW conversions, as well as M&M Super-Link/True 20 ones too, offered for free.

Re: RPG Future Rules System
As I mentioned in the news section below the comic, I'm going for Pathfinder as a system for the Nahast RPG. As I say above, I will be adding system conversions for Savage Worlds and quite probably Mutants & Masterminds/True20. Work in earnest will start in a month or so, so expect some news from that front around then
